Commonly treated conditions
Cataract: It is the clouding of the lens. Its symptoms are dim or blurry vision, difficulty seeing at night, sensitivity to glare and light, requiring brighter light for activities, such as reading, seeing halos around lights, frequently changing eyeglass prescription, double vision and fading or yellowing of colors. It can be treated through cataract surgery.
Glaucoma: The optic nerve gets damaged in absence or presence of elevated intraocular pressure. When left untreated, gradual vision loss may occur. Initially, there may not be any symptoms but when the disease worsens, symptoms, such as loss of side vision, seeing halos around lights and glare in bright light, redness in eye, hazy eye, eye pain, tunnel vision and vision loss may occur. It can be treated using eye drops and through surgical procedures, such as trabeculectomy, canaloplasty, laser trabeculoplasty, glaucoma drainage implant surgery, glaucoma drainage implant surgery and laser-assisted non-penetrating deep sclerectomy.
Squint: It is a misalignment of eyes in which the eyeballs point in different directions. Its symptoms are deviation of eyes, and double vision. It can be treated through surgery.
Refractive Errors: They occur when, due to the shape of the eye, the eye is not able to focus properly. There are many kinds of refractive errors, such as near-sightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia.
Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD): An abnormality affecting the center of the retina is called macular degeneration. It can be of two types-dry AMD and wet AMD. Its symptoms are blurred vision, seeing straight lines in a distorted manner, and a dark or empty area in the central area of vision. Dry AMD can be treated with the help of low vision eyeglasses, but wet AMD must be treated with injected medications or laser surgery to close the blood vessels that leak.
Lazy Eye or Amblyopia: One eye is not able to focus as well as the other eye which is characterised by reduced sight. The symptoms of lazy eye are inwardly or outwardly wandering eye, poor perception of depth, blurred vision, double vision, tilting of head, squinting and abnormal outcome of eye tests.
